Alex Jonnes, Apprentice Lineman
Watertown Municipal Utilities

Alex Jonnes was not always interested in a journey lineman career. But encouragement from his friends from Brandon, SD, where he grew up, customers from the local automotive shop he worked at after high school, and instructors at Mitchell Technical Institute (MTI) led him to this dream.

After graduating from Brandon Valley High School in 2007, Alex applied for the Power Line program at MTI. Since there was a one-year waiting list, he worked for the high school doing outdoor maintenance and detailed cars for a local automotive dealer in the meantime.

"That year cemented the idea that I needed to go to school," said Alex. "I talked to some customers who were linemen, and they all liked their work and recommended it."

Alex began the course in Fall 2008 and excelled tremendously at it. He graduated at the top of his class and was presented the "Spirit of MTI" award. Alex then gained further experience in the power line field through the Department of Labor's summer youth work experience program.

A detailed training plan was developed with Watertown Municipal Utilities that covered all phases of apprentice lineman work. Upon completing his internship, Alex was hired part time which quickly turned into a full-time position.

Alex says what he likes most about his career is that every day there is a new challenge and a lot of problem solving involved. He is looking forward to becoming a journey lineman after four years as an apprentice.

The South Dakota quality of life also adds to Alex's fulfillment.

"Watertown is a nice, friendly community; I enjoy it here," said Alex. "I love the recreational activities, such as hunting and fishing, and being near my family."
