Job seekers can get free gas card in Sioux Falls
The South Dakota Career Center in Sioux Falls has been selected to help identify job seekers in the Sioux Falls community who could benefit from a one-time, free gasoline card for $10. Employment Representatives will get to know the job seeker and determine their need for gas to further their job search. Those selected will be referred to Community Outreach, a local non-profit organization, who will issue a $10 gas card. This program will continue until the funds are exhausted.
South Dakota Sees Personal Income Growth
South Dakota ranked second behind only neighboring North Dakota in state personal income growth in the first quarter of 2008, according to a release by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). State personal income in South Dakota rose 3.8 percent. The national increase in state personal income was just 1.1 percent for the same period.
SDSU Now Offers Entrepreneurial Studies Degree
A new bachelor of science degree in entrepreneurial studies from South Dakota State University has been approved. The program is designed to meet the needs of the Sioux Falls market at University Center, as well as on the campus in Brookings. The degree prepares students to start up new for-profit or not-for-profit enterprises, work independently in a creative endeavor or manage an organization. The program will be available this fall, and is expected to serve up to 57 students within three years.

New Degree Programs Approved at BHSU and NSU
The Board of Regents has approved new programs at Black Hills State University and Northern State University. BHSU will offer a M.S. degree in strategic leadership with the plan to make it available online in Fall 2008. BHSU has also been approved for a minor in outdoor education. NSU has been approved for a bachelor’s degree in musical theatre.
BHSU Now Offering Industrial Technology Degree
A new associate of science degree in industrial technology from Black Hills State University has been approved. The degree will be offered in Sioux Falls, Rapid City and Yankton. Students will gain entry-level skills for industrial technology positions in such industries as communications, construction, manufacturing, power and energy, and transportation. Courses will be offered at the three sites starting this summer, and the coursework is designed so students may easily transition into completing a four-year degree in industrial technology if they choose.
Brookings Gears up for Innovation Campus
South Dakota State University and Vision Brookings have teamed up to create the new Innovation Campus. Construction on the first building is underway. The campus will focus on wind energy, bio-fuels, agriculture, engineering, software development, pharmaceutical research and infectious diseases. Terex Utilities to Expand Facility in Watertown
Terex Utilities has announced plans for a $4 million expansion of its current manufacturing and office facility in Watertown. The 40,000 square foot expansion, projected to be complete in Fall 2008, will include a new, multi-stage paint operation, a new research and development facility, and offices. The expansion is expected to contribute up to 175 new jobs to the local economy. Terex is one of Watertown’s largest private employers. View current openings.
DSU Making 3 Degree Programs Available Completely Online
Dakota State University will soon make available to students three more of its degree offerings completely online. The new options apply to the B.S. degree in computer information systems and two associate degrees, one in business management and another in applications programming. DSU will take advantage of the Internet and other courses already offered by the state’s universities to deliver these degrees online, regents’ officials said. Faculty will advise students using e-mail, telephone, and live chat sessions.
Reservation Jobs Created
A new firm at Mission will bring more than 25 high-paying jobs to the Rosebud Indian Reservation within the next couple of years, officials say. Advanced Electronic Rosebud Integration will develop lead-free circuit boards for Radiance Technologies, which has a contract with the U.S. Space and Missile Defense Command. Radiance Technologies is headquartered in Huntsville, Alabama. The bulk of these jobs are for electronic technician specialists.
South Dakota Named to Top 10 for Business
The Pollina Report recently named South Dakota the sixth best pro-business state in a comparative evaluation of job creation and retention efforts of all 50 state governments and the federal government. Rising from seventh position last year, the state has been in the top 10 for the fifth year in a row.
Regional Cities Named Best Business Places by Forbes
In a special report released in March, Sioux Falls was ranked number one in the country as a 'best place for business and careers' in the annual Forbes.com survey. Rapid City was seventh.
